GUIDELINES FOR ABSTRACTS

Papers accepted for the program will be scheduled for either 15 minutes or 25 minutes, with 5 minutes allowed for discussion.

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR ABSTRACT

Due Date for Abstracts: 15 December 2007 15 JANUARY 2008.  Abstract submission will be via an on-line system via this link.  When you arrive at the abstract submission site, you will need to create a user name and password for yourself (for full anonymity of review, it is suggested that you create a user name which does not contain your actual name, since that will be entered elsewhere).  Then you will need to fill in a brief form.  Once you complete the form, you will need an "enrolment key".  The "enrolment key" for LACUS 2008 is "Quebec" (type it without the quotation marks, but with a capital "Q").  This is the whole process:

  1. Enter a user name and password.

  2. Fill in a form with some data about yourself to finish creating your user name.

  3. Enter the enrolment key when it is requested.

  4. Download the abstract template if submitting your abstract in Word format (the template contains formatting instructions).

  5. Enter your author data.

  6. Upload your proposal abstract.

You do not have to complete the whole process at one sitting.  Having a user name and password will allow you to return to make any necessary additions / changes to your presenter data and/or your abstract before the submission deadline, and later, to see the reviewers' rating and comments.  If submitting more than one proposal, you will need to create a separate user name for each submission.  When you return, use the same link above.  But when you go to the site after the first time, you will just need to enter a user name and password and will then go directly to the LACUS 2008 on-line proposal submission page.

ELIGIBILITY

You do not have to be a member of LACUS to submit an abstract.  If your abstract is accepted, you must be a member to present your paper at the meeting.  Members will automatically receive the publication resulting from the conference.

PRESIDENTS' PRIZES

Continuing a tradition inaugurated by the late Kenneth Pike, a committee consisting of the President, the President-Elect,
and former Presidents of LACUS will select the winner of the annual Presidents' Prize, with an award of $500, for the best
paper by a junior scholar.  For purposes of this prize, 'junior scholar' is defined as one who has had a doctoral degree or its
equivalent for less than five years.

The Presidents' Pre-doctoral prize, with an award of $100, will be given for the best paper by a student who has not yet received a doctor's degree.

For purposes of these prizes, 'best paper' is defined as that which in the judgment of the committee makes the most important contribution to knowledge.  Organization and presentation and the quality of the abstract are also considered.

The prizes will be awarded at the annual banquet, to be held at the end of the meeting, Saturday, June 14th.

Only single-authored presentations will be considered for prizes.  A person who has previously won the same prize twice is no longer eligible for that prize.

Junior scholars and pre-doctoral scholars should identify their status when submitting their the abstracts, to indicate their eligibility for one of the prizes.

FINANCIAL AID

Thanks to the Ruth Brend Memorial Fund, limited assistance may be available for scholars from countries with weak currencies who submit strong abstracts. For information, contact the Conference Committee Chair, Douglas Coleman.

PUBLICATION

A selection of the papers presented at the meeting (not to include write-ups of tutorial/workshop presentations) will be chosen by a panel of referees for publication, with appropriate revisions, in LACUS Forum XXXV.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Information relating to travel, the university, and accommodations will be posted on the LACUS web site (
www.lacus.org) as it becomes available.

Detailed information will be sent to all LACUS members and to nonmember authors of accepted abstracts in March.
