How to
use printed Chemical Abstracts at UT
-
This guide will help you use the printed Chemical Abstracts to find citations
in the chemical literature. Contains material specific to the University
of Toledo, but will give anyone a guide to all of the separate parts of
CA and how to use them. An example of a search is included, as well as
supplementary material from the Chemical Abstract Service.
- SciFinder
Scholar 2004
- Electronic version of the Chemical Abstracts database. Download
instructions for University of Toledo Faculty, Staff, & Students.
-
CAS
Title Search
-
Keyword search of titles (and abbreviations) of journals indexed in Chemical
Abstracts.
-
Finding Chemical Information
-
A guide to the use of basic chemistry reference sources prepared by the
University of Texas chemistry library. Contains both extensive bibliographies
and "how to's". Remember to check your own library to see if you have access
to the same sources.
-
ThermoDex Search Page
-
An index to the thermodynamic properties listed in over 70 common handbooks,
prepared by the Univeristy of Texas Chemisty Library. Many of these will
be available at Toledo. (Note: "UT" on this site refers to the University
of Texas, not University of Toledo!)
-
IUPAC
Compendium of Chemical Terminology
-
Authoritative definitions of chemical terminology.
-
CIS-IU Home Page
-
Chemical Information Sources from Indiana University is a guide to information
science (or library science) in chemistry. It includes guides to printed
material and instructions for online searching to find chemical information.
Chemistry-Related Databases
- SciFinder
Scholar 2004
- Electronic version of the Chemical Abstracts database. Download
instructions for University of Toledo Faculty, Staff, & Students.
-
ChemFinder
-
This isn't a database itself so much as it is a chemical search engine
on the Web. It indexes hundreds of chemical information sites,
and is searchable by name, name fragment, formula, molecular weight (including
ranges), Chemical Abstracts Registry number, and structure in SMILES format.
The information it returns includes links back to the original databases.
-
Organic Compounds
Database
-
This database of physical and spectroscopic data on organic compounds is
searched by way of an extensive form. You can specify ranges of physical
properties, organic groups, or partials names to search for a list of compounds.
The data is compiled from authoratative,
standard sources.
-
NIST WebBook
-
The NIST WebBook will provide access to the full array of data compiled
and distributed by NIST under the Standard Reference Data Program. It features
especially thermochemical and thermophysical data, as well as IR and MS
spectra. All of the information is fully referenced (and cross referenced)
to the journal literature.
-
Abbreviations
of Chemical Compounds
-
A searchable database of common chemical abbreviations for molecules (e.g.
DMSO), ligands or substituents (e.g. Ph), or chemical classes, (e.g. PCB's).
A handy reference.
-
CHEMINDEX Database
-
From the Canadian Occupational Safety and Health department, this
database is good way to find synonyms and CAS Registry numbers for over
200,000 substances.
-
Environmental
Fate Databases
-
A database of the environmental fate of common chemicals, with references
to the literature.
-
Experimental Log P
(Octanol-Water) Database
-
A database of over 13,000 LogP values from the experimental literature.
Searchable by Chemical Abstract Registry Number, this resource will give
the LogP value of the octanol/water partition coefficient for organic compounds.
(Thanks to Dr. Kenneth Bachmann for bringing this resource to my attention.)
-
Protein Databank
-
Search for x-ray or NMR structures of proteins by keyword, author, or other
criteria, to be displayed on your browser. (Plugin may be required to view).
A simple form to the same type of data can be found at Molecules
R Us from the NIH.

Chemical Physics Preprint
Database
-
Preprints are a popular form of publication in physics. They are essentially
unpublished (prepublished) journal articles, that are distributed before
publication for wide dissemination of ideas in a fast moving discipline.
This archive provides access to preprints in chemical physics.
-
SDBS Integrated
Spectral Data Base System for Organic Compounds
-
SDBS is an integrated spectral database system for organic compounds, which
includes 6 different types of spectra (C13-NMR, H-NMR, MS, IR, Ramen, and
ESR) under a directory database of the compounds.
