4th Doctor Scarf and Hat

Since Facebook knows I liked Doctor Who, it started showing me posts of a group called Stitches in Time: The Who scarf knitters, prop makers & Cosplayers group. There is an entire contingent of people SO OBSESSED with making exact screen replicas of the 4th Doctor Who scarf, they will dye their own wool.

The origins of the scarf are fun. The Runner of the television series gave the costumes woman a box of yarn and told her to make a scarf. He didn't tell her not to use it all. The original scarf is over 11' long.

I didn't worry about exact matches and did not shell out the big bucks for wool but I did end up with four of these projects over 11 months of Robotics, Bowling, Theatre and Marching Band.

And then I made a few matching hats.

Rose Tyler Boomtown Scarf

Rose starred in Doctor Who as a companion but she had her own scarf. This is a different technique where you have 4 different colors of yarn and always use 2 of them at a time but in various combinations. That's what makes the color combinations pop out.

13th Doctor Scarf

Of course, the 4th Doctor is not the only celebrity scarf. The 13th Doctor had one, too. But her's wasn't as long.

Illusion Scarf

We live in a small town and have some small traditions. The mail carrier delivers hundreds of little gifts to all the mothers on her route in May. This year was a little bittersweet for her because it was the first year of making the bookmarks, hankerchiefs and cards without her mother. I went back to the illusion knitting technique and made her one using Mom's favorite color.

2 Tempestry Scarves

The Tempestry Project is personal and collaborative fiber art, environmental education, and climate activism through data representation all rolled into a sprawling community of friends, artists, crafters, teachers, scientists, nature lovers, activists, and more.

Check out the project here.

These scarves were done with a small group to promote the project. I made two for the joint chairs of the Presidential Commission on Carbon Neutrality at UM.

Wave Scarf

So scarves and blankets were quickly becoming a bit predictable so I started branching out. The scarf is made by just winding the yarn around the hook and then letting it out during the next row. I finished it at work during a business event and gave it to a dear friend.

Prayer Shawl

Prayer shawls are another time that I want to do something but have little offer. This went with a student back home to China for his ailing mother. (They sent back abalone and octopi as a thank you.)

Bolero Shrug

A work in progress for one of my daughter's friends. Her late mother used to knit and she has been in love with this viral design, so I don't mind sparing a little extra love and yarn.
